EndNote: Using EndNote with Word Online and Google Docs

EndNote 21 now offers Cite While You Write™ functionality with MS Word Online and Google Docs, which integrates with your EndNote 21 Web account. This integration allows collaborators to write articles directly in those applications and cite references from their EndNote libraries. After installing the EndNote 21 desktop on your computer, you can access your new version of the EndNote Web.

Activating EndNote 21 Web account

 
  1. Open EndNote, go to the Edit menu (or EndNote menu on the Mac OS), and select Preference > Sync.
  2. Click the Enable Sync button to start the EndNote online Login dialogue.
  3. If you already have your EndNote online account, add your credentials and click OK.
  4. If you don’t have an EndNote online account (or a Web of Science account), click the Sign Up button to begin the registration and activation process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your signup. Be sure to note your login and password, as you will need these to log in to the new EndNote Web.

EndNote CWYW in Word Online

 

You can add EndNote 21 Cite While You Write for Word Online via Microsoft’s Office Store:

  1. Open Word Online.
  2. Click File menu > Get Add-ins > More Add-ins.
  3. Search for EndNote and click Add.

  1. Review T&Cs and privacy policy, then click Continue.
  2. EndNote 21 Cite While You Write for Word Online add-in panel will automatically open next to your document in the References tab.
  3. Click Get Started, then sign in with your EndNote 21 Web account.

 

Using EndNote CWYW Word Online™

 

You are ready to cite references from your EndNote library.

  1. Insert in-text citation: put the cursor on where you want to cite, find the reference, and select it, then click on Insert Citation.
  2. To see the reference list, put the cursor at the end of the document and click on Update Citations.
  3. If you want to remove a citation, highlight the in-text citation, click Remove Citation, then click Update Citations.

  1. Referencing style: You can choose and change the referencing style from the CWYW panel, open three dots, then Citation style, choose or search a style, and then click Apply Style.

 

Adding EndNote CWYW in Google Docs™

 

You can add EndNote 21 Cite While You Write add-on in Google Docs via Google Space Marketplace:

  1. Open your Google Docs
  2. Click Extensions Menu > Add-ons > Get Add-ons.
  3. Search for EndNote 21
  4. Click the EndNote 21 Cite While You Write, then Install.
  5. Choose your Google account to continue the process.
  6. Click Allow for EndNote CWYC to access your Google account.
  7. You will find EndNote 21 Cite While You Write from the Extensions menu. The Open link may take a moment to appear.
  8. Click Open, then sign in with your EndNote 21 Web account.

 

Using EndNote CWYW with Google Docs™

You are ready to cite references from your EndNote library.

  1. Insert in-text citation: put the cursor on where you want to cite, find the reference, select it, and then click on Insert Citation.
  2. To see the reference list, put the cursor at the end of the document and click on Update Citations.
  3. If you want to remove a citation, delete the in-text citation, then click Update Citations.
  4. Referencing style: You can choose and change the referencing style from the CWYW panel, open three dots, then Citation style, and choose or search for a style.
