All your EndNote questions answered

Welcome

This guide will help you use the EndNote reference management software. The guide expands on the EndNote content covered in our main EndNote page (linked below), and concentrates on areas especially useful for the researcher, such as downloading large amounts of records from databases, entering references manually, sharing libraries, editing styles, removing duplicates and more. The menu on the right of page will show you the full range of options.

If you have a question about EndNote that isn't covered here, please use the library contact form (also linked below) to get in touch with a librarian.

STOP PRESS - EndNote 21 issue with et al.

When EndNote 21 was released, it contained an error where a document with 3 authors would not get shortened to et al. This error has been remedied by the release of the EndNote 21.2 patch file, so if you are able to update your EndNote to that version, this should fix the problem. If you cannot update your EndNote 21 to EndNote 21.2 you can install and use the APA workaround style attached below.

STOP PRESS - EndNote issue with greyed out Write and Cite Toolbar on Word for Mac

Since late March 2024, we have been seeing Mac users with a hard to fix issue where their EndNote toolbar for Word is greyed out. In some cases this has been caused by the Mac OS getting confused because the user profile has been set up with a different email address to their current UTS one. If this issue occurs with you, try going to the System Settings > Users and Groups and creating a new user profile (make it an administrator profile). If this solves the issue, then you will have to move any Word documents and EndNote libraries across to your new profile to work on them. If you are unsure whether you need to do this (as there can be other reasons your toolbar might be greyed out) then please use our contact form to get in touch with us. The form is linked below.
