Data Science: Search for Information

This guide will help Data Science students find information they can use for their studies

Places to search - Library catalogue

A good place to begin searching is in the Library catalogue. Use the Library catalogue to find books and journal articles on your topic.

A Library Catalogue search for the keywords: pipeline construction Central Asia found the article seen below

'Pipelines and powerlines...; Article found in the UTS Library catalogue

In this case, you can also try limiting your search to the last 10 years

Other places to look

As this assessment calls for the creation of an infographic, it would be good to go and get some statistics about pipeline production in Central Asia, as well as some exemplars of data visualisation in this space.

For statistics, you can try Statista or Marketline (both linked below). The image below is from a search for pipeline construction Asia  in Statista:

For exemplars of data visualisation, you can try Statista or a Google Image search. Just be sure when you use Google Images to evaluate the images you find there and trace them back to the original source. The image below was found in an image search for Turkmenistan gas pipeline.

For information on how to make a data visualisation, see the Data Visualisation page of this guide (linked below).

Evaluating your results

Not all the information you get from a search will be useful. A successful search will show results relevant to your topic. If your results are not relevant, go back and try different keywords in your search.

To evaluate whether your source is of sufficient quality use the S.I.F.T Test. Click on the letters of the acronym to learn more:
