Data Science: Search for Information

This guide will help Data Science students find information they can use for their studies

Places to search - Library catalogue

When searching, it's best to start simple. For our topic that would probably be starting with pipeline and then either Central Asia or the name of a Central Asian country. You could also add growth, construction or oil or gas, eg:

pipeline construction Central Asia or oil pipeline Kazakhstan

In this case, you can also try limiting your search to the last 10 years, or (if this refinement is available) limiting your search to reports. The result seen below is from a search for pipeline construction Central Asia in the Library Catalogue:

:'Pipelines and powerlines...; Article found in the UTS Library catalogue

Results were filtered to the last 10 years using this refinement option

2013-2023 set as a refinement in Publication Date in the library catalogue

Other places to look

As this assessment calls for the creation of an infographic, it would be good to go and get some statistics about pipeline production in Central Asia, as well as some exemplars of data visualisation in this space.

For statistics, you can try Statista or Marketline (both linked below). The image below is from a search for pipeline construction Asia  in Statista:

New global oil and gas pipelines' capital spending by region 2022

For exemplars of data visualisation, you can try Statista or a Google Image search. Just be sure when you use Google Images to evaluate the images you find there and trace them back to the original source. The image below was found in an image search for Turkmenistan gas pipeline

For information on how to make a data visualisation, see the Data Visualisation page of this guide (linked below)

Evaluating your results

Not all the information you get from a search will be useful. A successful search will show results relevant to your topic. If your results are not relevant go back and try different keywords in your search.

Find relevant results by checking the:

Even if your information is relevant, it might not be good quality. Check if it passes the C.R.A.P. Test before you use it.
