What are journals?
When studying Creative Writing you're likely to come across two types of journals.
- Academic Journals provide scholarly articles which are considered a high-quality source when writing academic papers & assessments.
- Literary Journals contain creative works & literature such as poems, short stories, non-fiction writing. These are sometimes known as magazines.
Academic journals
Below are some academic journals in the Library Collection which contain scholarly journal articles.
- Australian Literary Studies A peer reviewed scholarly journal. Covers many areas of writing.
- Journal of Screenwriting Topics covered in this journal include screenwriting, writing for movies & motion picture, drama and history.
- Journal of Writing Research An open access, peer-reviewed journal. Covers many areas of writing.
- New writing International journal focused on the practice and theory of creative writing
Literary journals
Below are some literary journals in the Library Collection.
- Griffith Review Mix of essays, memoir, reportage, short fiction, poetry and visual essays.
- Meanjin Primarily a literary magazine, Meanjin reflects the breadth of contemporary thinking, on literature, other art forms, and the broader issues of the times.
- Overland Radical literary magazine – showcasing brilliant and progressive fiction, poetry, nonfiction and art since 1954. The magazine has published some of Australia’s most iconic writers, and continues to give space to underrepresented voices and brand-new literary talent every single day.
- Westerly The print magazine is published twice a year in July and November, while the website publishes content throughout the year, including two Online Special Issues available for free digital download.
- Voiceworks Voiceworks is a national literary journal that features exciting new writing and art by young Australians. Our purpose is to create a space for people under twenty-five to develop their creative and editorial skills and to publish, and be paid for, their fiction, nonfiction, poetry, art and comics.
- Fantasy & Science Fiction Publishes fiction and science fiction articles.
- Quadrant Quadrant mainly publishes commentary, essays and opinion pieces on cultural, political and historical issues, although it also reviews literature and publishes poetry and fiction in the print edition.
