How to reference

 

To acknowledge a source through referencing, you need to:

  • show exactly where you have used someone else's ideas in the body of your assessment using an in-text citation or footnote
  • provide details in a reference list or bibliography on what the original sources were that you used, so people reading your work can locate them.

Referencing styles

 

A 'referencing style' will tell you how to put together a reference to acknowledge and credit a source. The referencing style you use will depend on your subject or assessment (if you're not sure, check your subject outline or talk to your tutor or subject coordinator). The main referencing styles used at UTS are:

 

Find out what referencing style you'll be using:

Faculties that use APA 7th referencing style:

  • Engineering and IT
  • Science
  • Transdisciplinary Innovation
  • Arts and Social Sciences
  • Design, Architecture and Building
  • Business
  • Health

 

Faculties that use AGLC referencing style:

  • Law

You may be asked to use a different referencing style by your tutor/lecturer. For those styles, please check with your tutor for guidance on the referencing style.
