Patents & standards
Patents are a form of intellectual property that govern the rights to an invention that is new and useful. A patent is a legally enforceable right to commercially exploit the invention for the life of the patent.
Standards are a set of agreed upon guidelines around the adoption of a certain process, service or technology. Some standards necessitate the use of a patented technology, which may involve a licensing agreement for a technology or process.
Existing within areas of intellectual property, patents and standards are particularly relevant to lawyers.
- IP Australia The official government body responsible for the administration of Australia’s intellectual property rights system: trademarks, patents, designs and plant breeder’s rights.
- AusPat A search database that allows researchers to access patent applications lodged and granted in Australia.
- World Intellectual Property Organization WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information and cooperation. Their website contains lots of good resources that you can access for free.
- Standards Australia Australia's peak standards organisation.
- SAI Global Library database giving full text access to all Australian standards.
