Advanced Literature Searching For Health

3.2 Reading your search

Reading codes and symbols

Health databases will use specific codes and symbols in your search history to let you know what's happening to your terms.

For example, in Medline (Ovid):

gestational diabetes mellitus.mp

gestational diabetes mellitus = your search term

.mp = the code which tells the database which fields to look in for your term.

Learning to interpret what these codes and symbols actually mean is important because this will be the format in which researchers will share or publish their searches.

You'll also need to understand what you're sharing as you will need to screenshot your search!
