Adding Boolean Operators to your search

Once you have a full list of your search terms, including Subject Headings, it's time to think about how these search terms will go together.   Boolean operators are a search language that connects search terms together. You use the connecting words AND, OR, or NOT to communicate the relationship between your search terms.

Let's think back to our example from the Synonyms activity and think about how these terms fit together.

  • Now you have the knowledge you need to combine all of the search terms in the concept table you have created! You've already got a column of search terms for each concept. All you have to do is join these terms in each column with OR, and then combine your concepts at the end using AND.
